Things to consider when choosing the best gifts for a 2 year old boy:

As a parent of a toddler, I want to give my little 2 year old boy everything he needs to learn and develop from a baby into a healthy, active and strong child.  What you and I both want most for our toddlers is for them to thrive and have FUN with play and exploring.

And 2 year olds need stimulation and activity to keep them engaged.  When I talked to child development specialists, their advice was to choose a variety of toys and suggested an easy checklist to keep in mind when choosing a new toy or finding the best gift for 2 year old boys:

  • Choose toys that your child can grow with and still enjoy.
  • Choose toys that encourage your child to be active and move their bodies.
  • Choose toys that encourage problem-solving skills and exploring skills.
  • Choose toys that activate your child’s imagination and give them a chance to “pretend” with real-life toys.
  • Choose toys that challenge them and help expose them to the educational skills they will use later.

Keeping these tips in mind, I tried to create this amazing guide that highlights some of the very best toys that check ALL of these boxes to bring your child the highest levels of joy and fun!

3. Diggin Hop Mini Toddler Trampoline with Handle Baby Indoor Jumping Toy

This is definitely a *must buy* for any high energy 2 year old who lives anywhere, but especially helpful if you live in a cold climate where you can’t get outside to burn off engery without getting too chilled.

All my mom friends absolutely RAVE about the strider balance bike. It makes learning to ride a real bike a breeze and their kids spent hours and hours on theirs. I had to grab one for my 2 year old and he feels so proud to match his sister as she rides her bike around the driveway.

Of course, you’ll want to grab a helmet to go with it, and if you’re wanting to minimize initial scrapes and bruises, this set of toddler protective gear is soft and easy to put on even wiggly boys who just want to go play already!

8. Cute as Bugs Tools for digging  and Small wagon to load up and empty

This is guaranteed to be one of your child’s favorite toy sets. Little boys love getting into the dirt and mine is absolutely obsessed with loading and unloading his little wagon. This is easy for small people to maneuver and the tools are just perfect for sand or digging in the garden right alongside you! What a great chance to make some awesome memories while providing something that’s practical and useful as well!

9. Fisher-Price Corn Popper

Hands down, this may be one of the best $10 I ever spent on toys for my little boy. From day one, he has gone crazy with it, pushing it at top speed all over the house. It’s amazing for burning off energy on rainy days, and if you have a smooth paved area outside, your child may have a blast running it around outside too! The popping is gentle enough on the ears too, which is a huge plus!

10. Cartoon Remote Control Cars

How fun is this? Get your little guy moving with these remote control cars. This is a great gift if you’re looking for something that he can get up and follow and move around with.

This bubble machine looks like a leaf blower, but instead of just air, he’ll get bubbles floating out the end of the leaf blower – how cute!!!

Explore With Me Toys for problem solving and fine motor skills

One of my favorite things about this age is the love of exploring everything within reach. I know that it’s never too soon to start giving my kids the gift of great problem-solving skills in age-appropriate ways.

A great way to start introducing and developing the ability to be a strong self-thinker is with toys that will give them a chance to figure something out on their own or with just a little bit of guidance.

Seeing my little guy’s extreme satisfaction of figuring it out on his own is really the best thing ever! So, if you find yourself asking “what gift should I give to my 2 year old boy that improves fine motor skills”, you’re in the right place.

These toys are great for encouraging fine motor skills, so if that’s what you’re looking for, you’ll love these!

1. Fat Brain Toys Kids Spinagain Toy

Wow. This is one of the best unique gifts to give a 2-year-old boy and everyone is talking about this brand!

The spinning action is something that 2 year olds just really get a kick out of, and it’s one of those toys that is fun but also checks of an amazing number of boxes if you’re going for a toy that encourages all the important developmental skills for this age.

They list hand-eye coordination, cause-and-effect learning, motor dexterity; vivid textures inspire tactile exploration, vibrant colors reinforce visual-recognition skills as some of the benefits of this toy!

All of their toys are pretty awesome, but this one especially appeals to the “how does this work” part of a boy’s brain.

2. The First Years Stack Up Cups

The things my kids do with these cups! Not only do they provide the challenge of learning how the sizes fit together, but there are endless alternative uses for them as well. Using them as bath toys will be a great option for your little tike.

Pouring water in the bath from cup to cup is a favorite here but my son spends hours using clamp and fine motor tools (like the ones in this set) to carefully transfer soft balls or pom-poms between his various cups as well. It’s absolutely great for hand eye coordination as well as problem-solving!

3. Shape Sorter Construction Vehicle Pull Along Toy

Oh my goodness. If you are looking for the best toy for a 2 year old boy, this right here is up there on the list! When I saw this, it when straight to my kid’s gift list because I know that hands down this would be his favorite shape sorter toy ever.  He is obsessed with pull-along toys right now, and with shape sorting. Double win!

4. Spike the Fine Motor Hedgehog, sensory fine motor toy for ages 2 +

If this is not one of the most adorable sensory toys for fine motor that I’ve ever seen, I don’t know what is. It’s also one of the perfect problem-solving toys. Seeing those little faces concentrating on getting the Hedgehog’s quills in place is just too cute, and they have a blast at the same time!

5. Educational Toy Pull Train with  Stacking Toys, Shape Sorter and Stacking Block Puzzle

We’re loving this pull along train for our 2 year old boy right now. Those brightly colored wooden shapes just catch his eye so much and it provides a lot of great chances to problem solve with figuring out which pegs fit which pieces. You will love how sturdy it is, too!

6. Fine Motor Skills Clamp Bee Matching Game

These adorable little bees and their beehive have multiple things going for them. I’m all about toys that provide learning experiences as well as give a prop that sparks imagination and creative free play. This toy meets a huge sensory need in 2 year olds to master the motor skills needed to use the clamps like come with this hive. It has to be one of our top played with items and you will LOVE all of the other fun things your child can do with this one!

Fine Motor Skill Toy Bee Hive Motessori Wooden Sorting Puzzle for 2 year old boys

7. Jumbo Lacing Beads Plus Nuts and Bolts for Toddlers Montessori Educational Play

I kind of thing lacing toys are on the “must-have” list for most parents of 2 year olds. I really like how chunky these are, because I don’t know about you, but my 2 year old is still sort of in the phase where everything has to go in the mouth at least a few times.  These are so easy for him to get ahold of and little boys just love those screws and bolts that come with this set, too!

8. Wooden Puzzles Educational Toys for Toddlers

Puzzles are one of those things that every child needs. These fall int0 the “best educational toys for 2 year old” category as well, but they are probably one of the top problem-solving gifts out there. Kids love those chunky, colorful pieces and will put these together over and over again!

Build With Me Toys that you can use in more than one way for logical thinking and problem solving

Toddlers are huge fans of anything they can put together, take apart, build up, and knockdown–on repeat. This makes toys that can be used in multiple different ways a huge hit with any 2-year-old boy. I’m just not sure what mine loves more — the challenge of stacking the blocks up or how loud of a crash he can make when he knocks them all down again. Either way, it is a great way to help him develop some logical thinking skills about cause and effect and figure out the basics of what works and doesn’t with building and creating.

1. LEGO DUPLO My First Bricks Colorful Toys Building Kit for Pretend Play

Did anyone else grow up with a box full of duplo bricks? I think these are probably one of the toys that I played with the most as a child myself, which makes me even more delighted to introduce them to my kids this year. I can’t wait to watch them discover and build their own child-sized masterpieces with the duplo sets I’m stashing for this year’s Christmas gifts! When you grab a set of these for your kids to enjoy, don’t forget to pick up the building plate as well! These are seriously some of the best toys for 2 year old boys ever!

2. Melissa and Dough Wooden Building Blocks Set

These right here are the classic wooden blocks we all know and love. These are the ones your little boy is going to love stacking and knocking down over and over again! They are super durable, which makes them perfect for handling all the exciting tower smashing fun that they’re going to enable for years to come! They pair well with these other childhood classics, the ABC Wooden Blocks as well.

3. Jumbo Unifix Cubes

I was so excited when I discovered that Unifix had jumbo cubes! My oldest child uses unifix cubes in her first-grade class and ever since her little brother saw her using them as a part of her math work, he has been obsessed. These jumbo ones are easier for him to get ahold of (and not lose in two seconds flat.) and you can still do so many awesome things with them. Color matching, sorting, and stacking makes 2 year old boys pretty happy, and these are the perfect unique toy that most little boys probably don’t have yet!

4. Fisher-Price Little People Farm Set

Imagine with Me toys for creative play, active imaginations, and strong storytelling & language skills

I was not prepared for how much my 2 year old would love imaginary play. His favorite thing is to climb up on the counter while I cook and use his own little kitchen tools to pretend to make up a dinner of his own. He gets a blast over “sweeping” and he loves costumes as much as my girl or maybe even a little more.

He is all boy, but if you wonder if you should buy your 2 year old boy a play kitchen or not, absolutely do it! He will love it and while he may not cook up the dainty little tea parties that a girl may be prone to, he will enjoy the creative story-telling skills that something like that provides as well as a chance to mimic real-life skills that he’ll grow into someday.

1. EverEarth Toddler Workbench with Tools

If papa gets his tools out, chances are your little guy is going to want to get his hands on those tools and “help”. This birthday gift is one of the most popular little boy gifts out there.  All those pegs to hammer in (again, and again. And again. And then over again, of course!) and bolts to screw in are guaranteed to be so much fun for your little guy.  If you need something a little less bulky, I can vouch for this WolVol Musical Learning bench. It’s so interactive and colorful that it keeps my 2 year old’s attention for longer than the average toy!

best toys for 2 year old boys work bench

2. Little Tikes Gas n Go Mower

This little mower makes for some great summer fun for your kiddo. They can “mow” with you and it even has a pull cord that triggers engine sounds! I’m pretty sure that even just that alone will be a blast for any little boy!

3. Melissa and Doug Let’s Play House Broom Mop Duster Plus Stand Set

Pretty much every time I get out my mop or broom, I have a miniature 2 year old shadow in the form of my son. His version of sweeping is pretty exciting, but I think that this toy is a fantastic way to involve your child in your daily routines. It helps them feel purposeful and like an important part of the family. Plus how cute are these tiny little brooms and dust pans anyway?

4. VTech Pop and Count Vacuum

Along the lines of the play broom mop and dustpan set is this super adorable push and pop vacuum cleaner. It’s just the perfect amount of whimsical and what really tickles our 2 year old is that it actually picks up blocks (and counts for good measure as it does)! Absolutely one of the most fun “pretend” tools we’ve seen!

5. Play Costume Set 4 Outfits

Like I mentioned, my 2 year old boy absolutely loves playing with costumes. He will tell me what he is and I’m impressed by some of the creative things he comes up with, rummaging through the dress-up bin, mixing and matching pieces. If you haven’t already started building a play clothes bin for your child, this set of four costumes is a great start. We also love our Fisher-Price Medical Kit that provides a lot of pretend hospital services for all the dolls and stuffed toys we own.

6. Step2 Fun With Friends Kitchen with Realistic Lights and Sounds

I know sometimes we parents second guess ourselves and wonder if we should buy our 2 year old boy a play kitchen or if that’s a toy that little girls might appreciate more.  Well I know from my experience that the play kitchen is one of the most universally loved pretend play items out there for boys and girls. I love that this one comes with some dishes and food included–and even has a place for a favorite stuffed animal to be the family pet!

There are tons of fun additions to a play kitchen: Felt Food (like this fun sandwich kit) and plastic “sliceable” food to lots of colored pots and pans. Speaking of pots and pans, we really like this set in our outdoor play kitchen because the Learning Resources Pretend and Play Cooking Set is so durable!

Should you buy your 2 year old boy a play kitchen?

7. Playskool Boy Plush Doll Toy with motor skill practice

I think dolls are another thing we parents aren’t sure if we should get for our little boys. But I’m a strong believer that since little boys grow up to be fathers one day, if they are interested in dollies, it’s a great chance to foster nurturing, gentle behavior in a child who may more often be rougher and more active. One thing that your little boy will love about this doll is not only is he super colorful, but he has a lot of cool fine motor skill developing features like zippers and buttons and a buckle to snap and unsnap!

But if you are looking for a sweet little boy doll that is perfect for cuddles, we really love the Snug Up Jonas Soft Baby Boy Doll.  I’ve had a lot of mama friends who are also looking for Anatomically Correct Baby Boy Dolls for their little boys and they recommend this one!

8. Tents for Imaginative Play Time

Every kiddo loves to have their own space to enjoy, and little boys are no different. Tents allow them to sneak away while still being within eyesight and play with their toys on their own – which is a great thing!

Self-directed play is so, so important for imagination!

Choose a few toys that will challenge them and expose them to skills they will need later (such as reading and numbers)

I’m always looking for the best educational toys for 2 year olds. Even though your 2 year old boy won’t be in school for a while, this is the perfect time for us to foster a life long love of learning new concepts and new skills through their playtime and by introducing them to concepts and ideas that they will use in the future when they do start preschool in a couple of years.

My kids love arts and crafts and anything that provides repetition. and absorb so much through toys like those on the list below.

1. LeapFrog Spin and Sing Alphabet Zoo

Of all the brands, I think parents universally look at LeapFrog as an educational toy authority. This right here is one of the most popular electronic educational toy for a 2 year old boy.  Your child is going to LOVE the action of spinning that wheel and hearing the sounds and music while learning the letters of the alphabet!

electronic educational toys for 2 year old boy spinning alphabet zoo

2. Melissa and Doug Sound Puzzle Set Numbers and Alphabet

I was so impressed at how quickly my toddler children picked up on letter and number recognition when they played with these sound puzzles. Match the letter to its spot, and it says what it is. They wore the first one out and I had to replace it! I feel like adding these Learning Journey Lift and Learn color and shapes to the set would round it out perfectly and make an amazing gift!

3. VTech Touch and Teach Word Book

Here’s another great electronic educational toy for 2 year olds. This book shows pictures and your child can press it to hear the word.  My kids love this kind of book and it really does work in expanding their vocabulary and is an early introduction to sight words as well!

4. Baby Toy Zoo Series Soft Alphabet Cards

Now these are just plain awesome. Soft and durable so you could introduce them much sooner than 2 years old if you wanted to, but a great tool for working on recognizing the letters of the alphabet while playing. I love that they have a tote with them because let’s be honest–carrying things around is one of the Most Fun Things Ever when you are two!

5.Crayola My First Palm Grip Crayons

We love Crayola when it comes to early learning and child-safe arts and craft supplies. These crayons are such a perfect shape for little hands to grab and just get busy making gorgeous artwork for the grandparents! Other first arts and craft supplies we use and love include Crayola My First Safety Scissors and My First Jumbo Toddler Paint Brushes along with Crayola’s washable finger paints!

6.Rainbow Counting Bears and Matching Sorting Cups Toddler Math Games

This set is so versatile! Colors, patterns, sorting, teamwork–it’s the perfect lead-in to a school setting and makes getting a headstart on some of the next educational milestones so fun! I love that the bears in this set are so chunky. My 2 year old adores them!

Choose toys that encourage different age groups to play together

When you and your child play together, it creates a special bond that can last a lifetime. Giving of your time is one of the best gifts for 2 year old boys (and girls!) and it’s also FREE! Parents and children can play with pretty much anything, but there are some things that are created especially for adults and children and can encourage listening skills, working together, and self-control as they learn to wait their turn and give other people a turn. Some of my favorite times are when we all play a simple, silly game together. It’s often the perfect distraction when one of us is feeling cranky.

1. Seek a Boo

Oh my goodness. You have to get this game and play it with your toddlers. The concept is based on a traditional match game, but the pieces are much more toddler-friendly. You will have an absolute blast with this game!

2. Toddler Scavenger Hunt at Home

I love this game as a fun way to teach following directions while playing together! It’s a pint-sized version of a game my older kids love too, so everyone gets in on it! I love that it can be indoors because sometimes when the weather is bad for days at a time, we all need something fun to distract us!

Board Books to Read Together

I couldn’t wrap up this article without talking about one of my favorite things and something that I think makes the best gift for a 2 year old who has everything : BOOKS!

Reading aloud to your child is an amazing way to increase their vocabulary, boost their awareness and give them new ideas and thoughts. It instills a love for reading at an early age and does so many wonderful things for early development. And there are thousands of amazing books to choose from. Touch and Feel, Lift the Flap. Anything interactive or with a good rhythm are sure to be hits. Here are a few of my 2 year old boy’s favorites!

1.The Very Hungry Caterpillar

I think the real question would be, who doesn’t love The Very Hungry Caterpillar? Eric Carle has a way of wrapping up a concept about nature or our world and making it simple, colorful and just so fun. I think we read this book a dozen times a week at least, so if your little guy does not have it, grab a copy for a gift! Check out some of Eric Carle’s other books, like this World of Eric Carle Around the Farm Sound Book! (It’s way too fun, you guys!)

2. Little Blue Truck Board Book

Beep! Beep! Beep! We love the Litte Blue Truck. He models kindness and caring to all the animals on the farm and even the grumpy big Dump. I just discovered there’s another book about Little Blue and bedtime, and it’s going straight on to our wishlists!

3. Usborne’s That’s Not My… gift set

When my son was born, someone gifted me one of Usborne’s “That’s Not My…” books. From the time that he could sit up and hold it, it has been one of his favorites. He brings all of his little “that’s not my” books out at least once a day. The touch-and-feel parts on each page are just too fun. If you want something unique for your 2 year old boy, try these!
