There are few things you will ever hear me complaining about living out here in the middle of the woods.

Except when it comes to the bugs!

One bad side effect of having a gorgeous view of a lake to look at each morning is that is exactly when the mosquitoes raise their babies.

I have ALWAYS been the main course for mosquitoes. If I step outside for just a few seconds, they always find me.

Even if nobody else around me is being bothered by the buzzing little vultures, they are always swarming me and leaving me with the worst itchy welts all over my body.

Since I am continuing my quest to eliminate harsh chemicals from my home, I’ve been searching for just the right option for me.

Citronella Spray

I’ve come to the conclusion that I can easily make my own bug spray recipe using Citronella, a well known bug deterrent.

Citronella has been used for over 50 years as a repellent used for various insects such as mosquitoes, biting flies, and fleas.

Here is a great Citronella Bug Spray Recipe that you can use to stay bug free all year long.

Citronella Bug Spray Ingredients

How to Make Your Own Bug Spray

Step 1: Fill your spray bottle almost full, leaving enough room to add 30 drops of Citronella Essential Oil to the bottle.

Step 2: Shake well before use and spray to exposed areas.

That’s it! Super easy to make and use.

Additional Essential Oils to add (Optional)

Peppermint Essential Oil (Adds a Nice Cooling feeling)
Tea Tree Essential Oil (Moisturizing & Cleansing)
Lavender Essential Oil (Smells AH-mazing!)

Tips

  • Be careful using Peppermint essential oil on kids and near the eyes because it is considered a “hot” oil and will sting if it gets in the eyes.

*Saving Dollars and Sense Tip: You can add any of your favorite essential oils that you’d like to, but stay away from any of the citrus oils which are photosensitive and not a good idea on your skin outdoors, especially in the sun.

I always use and recommend using high quality essential oils when using them on your skin.

Other “essential oils” could contain added chemicals or fillers oils that I am trying not to expose my skin to when I can help it.

These Essential Oils are THE BEST and I’ve had great results with them. Plus since they aren’t watered down they actually work better and last longer.
